Seminar cercetare DFT „Algorithms, models, intelligence: explainability and explanation in AI”

Prezentarea profesorului Muntean se intitulează „Algorithms, models, intelligence: explainability and explanation in AI”. Iată un rezumat:

„This paper promotes an interpretation of AI systems (Deep Neural Networks, DNN, and some Machine Learning Algorithms, MLA) as models and extends results about scientific and formal models (mainly mathematical models) from the philosophy of science to AI algorithms. It addresses two main questions about representation and explanation of this interpretation: (T) What is modeled or represented by the AI system (the target T of the AI model)? (E) Are AI systems explanatory? After surveying some answers to question T, the paper argues that the most realistic representation of AI systems is T as a “quasi-target” (T is not a real object but a counterfactual or hypothetical target). Furthermore, the paper argues that AI systems have explanatory power and surrogate reasoning from these models is possible in a limited number of cases. For this purpose, the AI systems are interpreted as ensembles of models, and explanations from AI models are exploratory and “how-possibly,” at best. The explananda of AI systems are not real targets but features of data or methods of collecting data.”
Prezentarea se va desfășura miercuri, 24 iulie, orele 17.00-19.00, în sala „Constantin Noica” de la etajul 1 al Facultății de Filosofie din Splaiul Independenței nr. 204, București 060024. Bucharest-Princeton-Hamburg summer school in early modern philosophy, July 14-21, 2024

Controversies vs. collaboration in the scientific revolution: societies, experiments and the “common language” of science across seventeenth- and eighteenth-century Europe

Hamburg Institute of Advanced Studies, Hamburg (Germany)

14-20 July 2024

Organised by: Dana Jalobeanu (University of Bucharest, HIAS Alumna), Daniel Garber (Princeton University), Matthias Schemmel (University of Hamburg), Rodolfo Garau (University of Hamburg).

A wonderful endeavor spearheaded by Dana Jalobeanu, president of the European Society for the History of Science, and our colleague. This year joined by HIAS (Hamburg Institute for Advanded Studies).

More about the summer course here: https://hias-hamburg.de/events/summer-school-2024-2/ Intensely collaborative and interdisciplinary, this over 20 years old initiative brings together master and doctoral students, postdocs and early career scholars. A haven for the history and philosophy of science.

Over time, master students in Philosophy have been the bread and butter of this event. Learn more about our master programmes here (https://filosofie.unibuc.ro/studii_masterat/) and apply before Monday, July 23 here: https://filosofie.unibuc.ro/admitere/

For any questions, don’t hesitate to reach out to our programme coordinators (prof. Jalobeanu is one of them) or at office@filosofie.unibuc.ro

Organised by: Dana Jalobeanu (University of Bucharest, HIAS Alumna), Daniel Garber (Princeton University), Matthias Schemmel (University of Hamburg), Rodolfo Garau (University of Hamburg).

Invited speakers: Sophie Roux (ENS), Roger Ariew (University of South Florida), Scott Mandelbrote (University of Cambridge)

This intensive summer school will bring together students, early career researchers and established researchers, providing a unique international, interdisciplinary and interactive learning environment. Lectures and informal reading groups, panel discussions and presentations will focus on some of the well-known episodes of scientific and philosophical collaborations that shaped the early modern world. We will investigate collaborative practices of reading, writing, and doing experimental research. We will see how some of the famous philosophers – such as Descartes, Leibniz, and Newton – fared as collaborators. We will show that some of the early modern controversies – such as the vacuum controversies or the metaphysical debates over the nature of space and the place of God in the universe – emerged from what was initially a collaborative project. More generally, our purpose is to prove that collaborative stages of experimentation, concept formation and instrumental language building are essential prerequisites to defining the terms of a controversy. We also want to encourage a more general reflection (and self-reflection) on the nature, purpose, and features of scientific collaboration in our integrated world of research.

The format of the summer school: lectures (in the morning and evening), reading groups, presentations and panel discussions for the rest of the day. Students will give short presentations and will work together in small reading groups. The summer school activities will take place on the premises of the Hamburg Institute of Advanced Studies (HIAS). Students and professors will be hosted together in the same hotel nearby HIAS.

There is no participation fee, and a substantial part of the costs of accommodation in Hamburg and travel will be covered by the organizers. To apply, send a short CV, 500 words letter of intention and 500 words abstract of your current project to dana.jalobeanu@filosofie.unibuc.ro. Deadline January 15, 2024

The Economists’ Philosophy Day – A Journal of Philosophical Economics celebration of philosophical reflection in economic science

In deference to the work of all inquisitive minds, past and present, who have embraced philosophical reflection to understand the consequential events for people’s wellbeing, the Journal of Philosophical Economics announces this call for the third edition of the

Symposium on the Economists’ Philosophy Day, 21 Nov. 2024.

In October 2005, the UNESCO General Conference proclaimed the third Thursday of November every year ‘World Philosophy Day’ recalling that ‘philosophy is a discipline that encourages critical and independent thought and is capable of working towards a better understanding of the world and promoting tolerance and peace.’

It is in this spirit that J Philos Econ proposes to celebrate the Economists’ Philosophy Day by organizing online plenary sessions on scientific communication dedicated to the philosophical landmarks through which our science has been challenged, for better or for worse. For this edition, this call invites contributions in the theme of

Democracy for sustainable life.

Today, local societies, national societies and global societies are facing some serious challenges. Health problems such as pandemics and ecological problems such as climate change, loss of biodiversity, pollution of land, air and water can be considered examples. An institutional structure characterized by democracy as a game of policymaking and decision-making will likely be more successful in the resolution of these problems than dictatorship. Freedom of speech is a prerequisite for whistleblowers in relation to the most difficult challenges and various cases of corruption.

But democracy is an issue as well in a university context. Departments of economics can be chosen as an example. A certain kind of economics, so called neoclassical theory, is in a close to monopoly position. Neoclassical economists tend to present their discipline as established and successful. In economics (and other social sciences), values, ethics, and ideology are always present and limiting attention to the ideology built into mainstream neoclassical economics is not compatible with democracy. New schools of thought or paradigms have appeared in response to new serious challenges. Ecological economics, in the sense of economics for sustainable development, is one example.

Proposals of approx. 500 words are expected by September 27, 2024. After acceptance, authors are invited to submit the full version of their study for peer-review. Proposals will be sent to editor@jpe.ro.
