This conference aims to bring together professors and researchers affiliated with UNESCO departments from Romania and from across Europe, in order to assess the human capital resources involved in the UNESCO network to support the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in the field of culture and education.

The theme of this year’s edition was inspired, on the one hand, by the 25th anniversary of the UNESCO Chair for Interculturality, Good Governance and Sustainable Development, within the University of Bucharest, and, on the other hand, by the 160th anniversary of the University of Bucharest and implicitly, of the Faculty of Philosophy, the co-founder of U.B.

The two anniversaries mark the enduring educational traditions and solid organizational cultures that have over time strengthened the prestige of our academic community. In this context, it is our responsibility to evaluate the reception, at the level of the public sphere and contemporary mentalities, of the role that the Humanities field — and especially the discipline of Philosophy — holds in shaping rational, free and responsible citizens. The on-going debates on the relationship between culture and education are becoming increasingly thorny, focusing on the reform processes and also on the public policy improvements in these fields. In such situations, we notice how rarely the role of Philosophy is invoked — the same Philosophy which UNESCO recognizes as a “school of human freedom” (Philosophy as a School of Freedom – 2007) and to whom it dedicates, ever since 2008, a commemorative day every third Thursday in the month of November.

Thus, we intend to investigate to what extent intercultural perspectives regarding fundamental values such as autonomy, freedom, and independence can be supported through a philosophical education in a global paideic space, by training citizens capable of understanding and respecting pluralism, diversity and equality between people. The subject of how philosophy upholds the education of cultural imagination, nurturing empathy and solidarity between individuals of different origins, together with the topic of various beliefs and histories will be approached through the lens of UNESCO’s stated objectives since 1998 — following a world conference dedicated to the differences between institutionalized philosophical education and philosophizing in the public space — up until today, when philosophy is employed as a form of life education through formal/non-formal/informal means.

This conference is also a cultural follow-up to the Declaration for Philosophy in Paris, launched in commemoration of the 1995 UNESCO conference: we therefore seek to critically analyse what efforts have been made, at the level of European society, for the expansion of philosophical education, for the promotion of philosophical knowledge in different cultural communities, institutions and social circles, and for the imposition of Philosophy on the public agenda, as a discipline that can support the development of the relationship between culture and education.

Since this is a conference organized by the UNESCO Chair of the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Bucharest, the organizers, together with the partners, believe that, given their professional expertise, they can respond to UNESCO’s call to evaluate the connections between “creativity, innovation, critical thinking, resilience and empathy”[1] in establishing the society of the future in a post-pandemic society, focused on sustainable growth, on the digitalization of cultural capital and the stimulation of intercultural education, while advocating for “philosophy as a school of freedom.”

The significant importance of examining the synergy between culture and education also stems from the current geopolitical and social context, in which migration, climate change and the collapse of representative and participatory democracies signal the need to respond to these clashes through the help of European communities of citizens who are ready to manage such challenges. Moreover, last year the Final Declaration of the UNESCO World Conference for Cultural Policies and Sustainable Development, MONDIACULT[2] 2022 was signed with the purpose of affirming culture as a global public good. The conclusions that arose after the previous edition of our conference emphasized the need for increased philosophical reflection on these three fundamental notions — culture, public good and education — an aspect we wish to support by creating a new framework for reflection and for critical thinking.

Therefore, the conference proposed by the UNESCO chair of the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Bucharest aims to evaluate the ways in which cross-sectoral, educational and cultural forms of cooperation between the UNESCO departments can respond to the MONDIACULT objectives and to the SDG objectives of the Sustainable Development Agenda for 2030.

Contributions may address, but are not limited to, the following themes and topics:

a) The role of intercultural communication in understanding the differences between autonomy, freedom and independence;

b) Cultural conditioning of freedom;

c) Combating social deprivation through culture;

d) Contemporary democracies: the meanings attached to freedom and to social responsibility;

e) Intercultural approaches to academic freedom;

f) ‘Everyday Europeanhood’[1]: a matter of autonomy, freedom and independence?

g) Philosophy, “the school of freedom”[2]: UNESCO’s role in protecting and promoting the Humanities field as a resource for shaping and educating contemporary democracies

Colocviul internaţional „Trasee alternative întru istoria creştinismului. Perspective istorice şi filosofice / Sentieri alternativi nella storia del cristianesimo. Prospettive storiche e filosofiche”, Sala de Conferinţe a Institutului Român de Cultură şi Cercetare Umanistică de la Veneţia, miercuri 11 septembrie 2024

Institutul Român de Cultură şi Cercetare Umanistică de la Veneţia, Departamentul de Studii Umaniste al Universităţii Ca’ Foscari de la Veneţia, Facultatea de Filosofie a Universităţii din Bucureşti, în colaborare cu Facultatea de Teologie Romano–Catolică a Universităţii din Bucureşti şi Facultatea de Teologie Valdeză din Roma, organizează Colocviul internaţional „Trasee alternative întru istoria creştinismului. Perspective istorice şi filosofice / Sentieri alternativi nella storia del cristianesimo. Prospettive storiche e filosofiche”, manifestare cultural–ştiinţifică ce va avea loc în Sala de Conferinţe a Institutului Român de Cultură şi Cercetare Umanistică de la Veneţia. Lucrările colocviului vor fi împărţite în două sesiuni care vor reuni patru şi, respectiv, şase comunicări, fiecare fiind urmată de discuţii. Colocviul va fi deschis publicului larg şi va avea valenţe nu doar ştiinţifice, ci şi educative, vizând o audienţă specializată, formată preponderent din studenţi, masteranzi şi doctoranzi de la programele de studii ale universităţilor din Regiunile Veneto şi Friuli Venezia Giulia.

În 2023 s-au împlinit treizeci de ani de la înfiinţarea, la Veneţia, a primului Consiliu Local al Bisericilor Creştine din Italia. Celebrarea acelui consiliu ecumenic a constituit un imbold pentru organizarea acestui Colocviu internaţional. Prima parte a Colocviului va fi dedicată urmăririi şi documentării acelor trasee alternative ale creştinismului care au reuşit să-şi croiască un drum în interiorul istoriei Marii Biserici. O mărturie în acest sens va fi prezentată de către moderatorul primei sesiuni, dr. Marius Bogdan Corbu, bursier “Nicolae Iorga” la Institutul Român de Cultură şi Cercetare Umanistică; în conformitate cu proiectul său de cercetare „Biserica valdeză din Veneţia: un caz de proto-protestantism în lagună”, acesta va vorbi despre mărturia valdezilor în calitate de creştini minoritari şi chiar persecutaţi vreme de multe secole. Aceasta este istoria unui creştinism alternativ la catolicismul majoritar din Peninsula Italică, confesiune ce îşi are rădăcinile într-o perioadă mai veche decât Reforma protestantă, mişcarea valdeză împlinind anul acesta 850 de ani de istorie.

A doua secţiune a manifestării cultural–ştiinţifice va fi dedicată analizei binomului credinţă/raţiune, prin urmare se va ocupa de relaţia dintre filosofie şi teologie, urmărind diferitele drumuri care au dus la întâlnirea acestor discipline – pornind de la antichitatea clasică, continuând prin mistica renană şi modernismul timpuriu, şi ajungând în cele din urmă la teologia contemporană. Această secţiune va fi moderată de Chris Octavian Ioniţă, bursier “Nicolae Iorga” la Institutul Român de Cultură şi Cercetare Umanistică, în continuitate cu proiectul său de cercetare: „Fără de început şi sfârşit. Pentru o fenomenologie a eternului pornind de la Emanuele Severino”.

Lucrările Colocviului se vor desfăşura în limba italiană şi în limba engleză, cu participarea unor cadre didactice şi cercetători italieni şi români, nu doar cu convingerea că obiectivele stabilite vor fi atinse, ci şi cu speranţa de a vedea conturate noi perspective de colaborare între specialiştii şi instituţiile celor două părţi. Colocviul internaţional, al cărui ideatori şi organizatori sunt Marius Bogdan Corbu şi Chris Octavian Ioniţă, bursieri “Nicolae Iorga”, face parte din activităţile de diseminare culturală şi ştiinţifică, înscriindu-se în rândul manifestărilor de specialitate ale Institutului Român de Cultură şi Cercetare Umanistică de la Veneţia de promovare a valorilor culturii române în Italia.

Cea de-a unsprezecea conferință a Societății Europene pentru Istoria Științei (ESHS 2024)

Colegii noștri, Prof. Dana Jalobeanu și Prof. Constantin Stoenescu, participă la congresul Science, Technology, Humanity, and the Earth, a XI-a conferință a Societății Europene pentru Istoria Științei (ESHS 2024). Evenimentul are loc la Barcelona în perioada 4-7 septembrie.

Profesorul Constantin Stoenescu va susține comunicarea intitulată “Hacking’s styles of reasoning and Kuhn’s lexicons. A comparative look”, ȋn timp ce Dana Jalobeanu, președintele actual al Societății Europene de Istorie a Științei, coordonează desfășurarea întregului eveniment. Cei doi profesori predau în cadrul singurului masterat de cercetare în filosofie din Romania, programul în limba engleză „Analytic Philosophy”. Congresul are un dublu aspect. Pe de o parte, adâncește întrepătrunderea dintre istoria și filosofia științei, explorând felul în care dezvoltări tehnologice au permis cadre conceptuale noi în care putem concepe lumea. Însă tema din acest an vizează științele pământului și are, ca atare, o deschidere spre comunicarea științei către publicul larg și efortul de a include rezultatele științifice cele mai noi în dezbaterea publică. Prezentarea profesorului Muntean se intitulează „Algorithms, models, intelligence: explainability and explanation in AI”. Iată un rezumat:

„This paper promotes an interpretation of AI systems (Deep Neural Networks, DNN, and some Machine Learning Algorithms, MLA) as models and extends results about scientific and formal models (mainly mathematical models) from the philosophy of science to AI algorithms. It addresses two main questions about representation and explanation of this interpretation: (T) What is modeled or represented by the AI system (the target T of the AI model)? (E) Are AI systems explanatory? After surveying some answers to question T, the paper argues that the most realistic representation of AI systems is T as a “quasi-target” (T is not a real object but a counterfactual or hypothetical target). Furthermore, the paper argues that AI systems have explanatory power and surrogate reasoning from these models is possible in a limited number of cases. For this purpose, the AI systems are interpreted as ensembles of models, and explanations from AI models are exploratory and “how-possibly,” at best. The explananda of AI systems are not real targets but features of data or methods of collecting data.”

Invited speakers: Sophie Roux (ENS), Roger Ariew (University of South Florida), Scott Mandelbrote (University of Cambridge)

This intensive summer school will bring together students, early career researchers and established researchers, providing a unique international, interdisciplinary and interactive learning environment. Lectures and informal reading groups, panel discussions and presentations will focus on some of the well-known episodes of scientific and philosophical collaborations that shaped the early modern world. We will investigate collaborative practices of reading, writing, and doing experimental research. We will see how some of the famous philosophers – such as Descartes, Leibniz, and Newton – fared as collaborators. We will show that some of the early modern controversies – such as the vacuum controversies or the metaphysical debates over the nature of space and the place of God in the universe – emerged from what was initially a collaborative project. More generally, our purpose is to prove that collaborative stages of experimentation, concept formation and instrumental language building are essential prerequisites to defining the terms of a controversy. We also want to encourage a more general reflection (and self-reflection) on the nature, purpose, and features of scientific collaboration in our integrated world of research.

The format of the summer school: lectures (in the morning and evening), reading groups, presentations and panel discussions for the rest of the day. Students will give short presentations and will work together in small reading groups. The summer school activities will take place on the premises of the Hamburg Institute of Advanced Studies (HIAS). Students and professors will be hosted together in the same hotel nearby HIAS.

There is no participation fee, and a substantial part of the costs of accommodation in Hamburg and travel will be covered by the organizers.
