The Faculty of Philosophy, University of Bucharest is calling for papers on the Philosophy of Philokalia for an issue dedicated to this topic.
Philokalia is a collection of spiritual edification texts compiled by Sts Makarius of Korinth and Nikodemus the Hagiorite (first publication: Venice, 1782; started being published in Romanian in 1946). The collection, which is still used today in private and in public readings, especially during communal gatherings in Orthodox Christian Monasteries, is of specific interest to philosophers not only because it relates to some of the key texts in Orthodox Patristic literature on the soul, the heart and the unification of body and soul, but also because it illuminates key metaphysical issues in Orthodox Philosophy of Religion, such as the nature of divine energeiai and how they differ from ancient Greek and medieval concepts of illumination and union with God.
The list of potential related topics below is indicative of the breadth and scope of potential contributions (and is by no means restrictive).
-Metaphysics and the Philokalia (nature of heart and nous, energeiai, God, process of deification; Nature and Mysticism in Philokalia; soul and death in Philokalia- the artificial and the natural in Philokalia)
-Epistemology and the Philokalia (ways of knowing God in Philokalia; ways of knowing the true self; relation of Freedom and Askesis to Knowledge; the role of the spiritual father in knowing God)
-Ethics and the Philokalia (ancient Greek Ethics and the Philokalic texts; Love and Eros in Philokalia; nepsis, compunction and freedom as preconditions of Ethics in Philokalia; the rope of spiritual father in doing good; protection of the Natural Environment and the role of Nature in salvation; Hesychastic Ethics ).
-Aesthetics and the Philokalia (ancient Greek aesthetic theories and the Philokalic texts; the Ethics and the Aesthetics of Philokalia; differences and similarities between Ethics and Aesthetics in Philokalia; Hesychastic Aesthetics).
-Political and Legal Philosophy and the Philokalia (ancient Greek political theories and monastic life and society in Philokalia; ways of transforming communities and social relationships through the Philokalic texts; culture and civilisation in Philokalia; equality, social freedom and political liberty in Philokalia; legality and morality in the Philokalic texts).
The Philosophy of Philokalia special issue will be published in the journal „The Annals of the University of Bucharest – Philosophy Series” (which is indexed by Web of Science (WoS) Core Collection’s Emerging Sources Citation Index – ESCI, EBSCOhost, Philosopher’s Index with Full Text, ERIH Plus, The Central and Eastern European Online Library – C.E.E.O.L and DOAJ; see for further info https://www.ceeol.com/search/journal-detail?id=1633). We have the pleasure to announce you that the deadline for submitting the abstracts for the International Conference “Cultural Heritage and Identities: Normative Perspectives, Sustainability and Global Governance” is extended until 20th of October.
The Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Bucharest via the Research Centre for the Study of Rationality and Beliefs, the UNESCO Chair in Inter-Cultural and Inter-Religious Studies and Public Reason Journal of Political and Moral Philosophy are pleased to launch the Call for Papers for the International Conference “Cultural Heritage and Identities: Normative Perspectives, Sustainability and Global Governance”. The conference will take place between 15 and 17 November 2019 at the Faculty of Philosophy. [1] Its main goal is to provide a platform for academic debate on heritage studies from an interdisciplinary perspective.

Over the course of the last few decades, heritage studies became a field of interdisciplinary research in its own right, with specific concepts and practices reflecting both its theoretical complexity, and the evolution of the legal and institutional landscape.
The notion of heritage is closely related to culture and identities, as individuals and social groups have a central role in selecting representative elements of tangible and intangible heritage to be safeguarded by national and international bodies. Heritage is, therefore, a normative concept, which combines cultural, spiritual, philosophical, political, national and economic values. In the context of globalization, as well as emerging new technologies and communication paradigms, the very notion of heritage is being constantly reconsidered and its approaches diversified. A noteworthy initiative is the 2003 UNESCO Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage which has established new standards for the definition of heritage and its protection. Moreover, not only is the representational dimension of heritage being reconsidered, but the social and political values attached to it become more and more prominent. Thus, policy-making with regard to heritage conservation and protection emphasises the importance of heritage for the sustainable development of communities by fostering tourism, creative industries, which, in the long run, impact on demographics, political institutions, social mobility and intergenerational solidarity. Last, but not least, the educational dimension of heritage conservation is equally important, since it is related to the transmission of values which legitimize various layers of identities.
Conference Topics:
General areas of interest include (but are not limited to) the following topics:
- Normative Perspectives: political values and cultural heritage;
- Ethics and heritage: cultural appropriation, intellectual property, sustainable development, societal impact of new medias and emerging technologies;
- Local and global perspectives on heritage: national, regional, trans-national identities, spiritual values and the challenges of globalization, evolution of identities;
- Philosophical implications and dilemmas generated: the social ontology of heritage definition, the phenomenology and ethics of identity formation in relation to elements of tangible and intangible heritage, social justice and heritage;
- Challenges of global governance in the field of heritage conservation and protection;
- Tangible and intangible heritage: conceptual maps, symbolic geographies, and the role of collective memory;
- Education and heritage: intergenerational value transmission, patriotism versus cosmopolitanism, metamorphoses of traditional museums;
- Digitisation and digitalization of cultural heritage: interactive creative industries, digital storytelling.
Information for Participants:
Contributions are expected from various areas of social studies and humanities, with a focus on interdisciplinary approaches, ethics and political philosophy. Both established researchers and PhD students are invited to send their presentation proposals in the form of abstracts not exceeding 500 words by 20th October 2019 at publicreason@filosofie.unibuc.ro. Along with the abstract, please send us your contact details: current affiliation, address and telephone number. Notifications of acceptance will be sent by 25 October 2019.
The organizers intend to publish a volume including articles inspired by the papers from the conference. Acceptance of the paper for the conference does not guarantee the inclusion of the article in the volume. We kindly remind you that by submitting the paper you implicitly agree to allow its publication in the conference proceedings.
For easier post-conference editorial work, it would be best if you would format your paper using Chicago 15style of reference, but this is not a formal condition for the publication.
Participation costs are not covered by the organizers. There is no participation fee.
Working languages of the conference: English and Romanian.

We offer two student places in the Princeton-Bucharest Seminar in Early Modern Philosophy for the students of the University of Bucharest who are willing to pursue studies in this area. Students who wrote essays on topics related with early modern philosophy and are willing to continue their studies in this direction are invited to send us a letter of intention (1 page) and the abstract of their paper (English, 500 words) by June 10 to dana.jalobeanu@gmail.com

Miercuri, 29 mai 2019, Constantin Vică, cercetător și doctor în filosofie, va susține conferința „Inteligență artificială, roboți și etica viitorului”. Evenimentul, organizat de Universitatea din București în cadrul seriei conferințelor „Știința pe înțelesul tuturor”, va avea loc în Sala Media a Teatrului Național București începând cu ora 18:00.
Adresată publicului larg și pasionaților de științe, conferința „Inteligență artificială, roboți și etica viitorului” ne invită să aflăm mai multe despre inteligența artificială, roboți și cum ne influențează acestea prezentul și mai ales viitorul.
Ce ne rezervă viitorul? Putem avea încredere în inteligența artificială și în roboți? Le vom acorda drepturi roboților sau vor fi sclavii noștri? Roboții și inteligența artificială vor ajunge să domine lumea? Vor avea aceștia conștiință? Ne vom îndrăgosti de ei, iar ei ne vor iubi? Pot fi agenții artificiali o formă a atenției și grijii pentru oameni sau un surogat nociv al afectivității umane care, de fapt, sporește alienarea? Oare noi, oamenii, vom deveni cyborgi? Sunt doar câteva dintre întrebările care configurează viitorul nostru și al întregii umanități. Un viitor care poate fi distopic, cu o omenire intrată în definitivă obsolescență, sub un risc existențial, sau unul utopic, în care vom fi eliberați de povara muncii și amenințarea morții, inclusiv distrugerea planetei noastre, viitorul poate fi drept sau plin de fracturi sociale și inegalități, totalitar sau democratic.
Roboții și Inteligența Artificială sunt deja în lumea noastră, în viața de zi cu zi. Mai puțin vizibili astăzi, mâine vor fi pretutindeni. Se hrănesc cu date și informații pe care noi le oferim, fac acțiuni pe care le dorim sau de care ne este frică. Trăim astăzi un proces de transformare a vieții în date, a proceselor și fenomenelor lumii în algoritmi, iar din această nouă structură se ridică un viitor incert. Pe internet, în războaie, în birouri și în fabrici, în bănci și pe bursă, în știință și în divertisment, în spitale și chiar în școli, agenții artificiali și Inteligența Artificială au și vor avea locul lor.
Arta de a face viitorul este arta virtuților și acțiunii morale. Viitorul nu este predeterminat, ci o construcție morală. Este rezultatul alegerilor și căutărilor noastre, al viziunii, imaginației și norocului, al criticii prezentului, al luptei pentru idei, resurse și tehnologii. Desigur, așa cum observa și un filosof revoluționar al secolului XIX, nu ne vom face viitorul în condiții alese de noi, iar progresul, atât de dorit, împingându-ne înainte ruinează trecutul, conform altui filosof, poate și mai profund, al secolului XX.
Constantin Vică este lector univ. dr. la Facultatea de Filosofie și cercetător la Centrul de Cercetare în Etică Aplicată din cadrul Universitatea din București, predă și publică în domenii precum etica informației și computerelor, etica mașinilor, bioetică, filosofia informaticii și filosofie politică și socială. Până în prezent, a publicat mai multe articole și studii privind proprietatea asupra informației, tehnologiile asistive inteligente, politica și etica internetului, „pirateria” online etc. în reviste precum Science and Engineering Ethics, International Journal of Social Robotics sau Public Reason. De asemenea, a co-editat volumul colectiv Filosofia științelor umane. In memoriam Mihail Radu Solcan și este coautor al manualului de Etică și integritate academică , ambele apărute la Editura Universității din București și accesibile gratuit.
