BUCHAREST CONFERENCE IN APPLIED ETHICS ’10
„Legislating Ethics”

What is a moral rule? How can an ethical norm become a legal rule? Is there a general tendency of translating moral prescriptions into laws? Can an ethical code produce legal effects directly? But what about other kinds of internal regulations dealing with moral behavior of employees, managers, board members et al.? These are only a few of the questions the BCAE ’10 participants will try to answer on October 29 and 30, 2010.
This year edition is being organized by Smart Solutions & Support, Romania, and the Research Centre in Applied Ethics, Faculty of Philosophy, University of Bucharest, with the support of the Romanian National Civil Servants Agency, the Romanian Commission for Bioethics from UNESCO, Dinu Patriciu Foundation and others.

SECOND CALL FOR PAPERS
Passionate Minds
Knowledge and the Emotions in Intellectual History
The centrality of the emotions in all areas of human thought, action and
expression has lately begun to be recognized and investigated with
increasing interest within a variety of disciplines, from cognitive science
and the philosophy of emotions to literary and anthropological studies. One
central insight of such explorations is that the view of the separation and
even opposition between cognition and affectivity is an unjust
representation of the complexity of the life of both individuals and
communities. Intellectual historians have also become sensitive to the
issue and are in fact in a privileged position to bring to the fore the
variety and richness of the approaches to the interplay of knowledge and
the emotions in the history of thought.
This conference aims to address the topic of the interplay of emotions and
cognition as it bears on historical views of epistemology, logic,
psychology, theology, medicine, moral philosophy or aesthetics, on
approaches to education and the transmission of knowledge, as well as on
the dynamics of intellectual communities. We invite panels and individual
papers that address any aspect of this theme with reference to any
historical period, as well as relevant methodological and historiographic
questions. There will also be general sessions devoted to other proposed
intellectual historical topics.

Cum citim azi, la 300 de ani de la publicare, Teodiceea lui Leibniz şi Tratat asupra principiilor cunoaşterii omeneşti al lui Berkeley

În timpul vieţii, Leibniz a publicat o singură lucrare filosofică importantă, Essais de Théodicée, în 1710; o lucrare complexă, abordând teme din metafizică, teologie raţională şi revelată, filosofie morală, filosofie naturală şi angajând diverse forme de argumentare.
Tot în 1710, George Berkeley a publicat A Treatise Concerning the Principles of Human Knowledge, în care a analizat natura şi originea ideilor şi a lansat concepţia sa denumită „imaterialism”. Tratatul conţine variate subiecte de metafizică, epistemologie, filosofia minţii, teologie filosofică etc.
Colocviul, organizat în două secţiuni distincte, îşi propune să exploreze conţinutul, receptarea şi impactul lucrărilor aniversate în cele trei secole de gândire filosofică europeană.
În legătură cu Teodiceea, pot fi abordate chestiuni îndelung discutate, precum originea şi cauza răului, raportul dintre raţiune şi credinţă sau armonia prestabilită, dar şi subiecte de interes relativ nou: viitori contingenţi, necesitate şi contingenţă, lumi posibile, tipuri de argumentare; de asemenea, probleme precum locul Teodiceei în corpus-ul leibnizian, contextul istoric, receptarea şi influenţa Theodiceei în diferite medii intelectuale pot genera investigaţii interesante.
În ce priveşte Tratatul asupra principiilor cunoaşterii omeneşti, Colocviul se va concentra asupra lecturii unor chestiuni de interes din perspectiva preocupărilor filosofice contemporane; dar, în general, va lua în considerare orice aspect care evidenţiează clar o legătură a subiectului ales cu lucrarea amintită. Cum citim noi argumentele lui Berkeley în favoarea „imaterialismului”, a „bunului-simţ” sau a lui Dumnezeu? Dar ceea ce spune el despre „failibilismul epistemic” ori despre„structurile corpusculare”? Berkeley a atacat multe din problemele care ne preocupă în prezent, precum percepţia, distincţia dintre calităţi primare şi calităţi secundare, universalele, natura explicaţiei, importanţa limbajului etc.
Apel pentru contribuţii
Sunt invitaţi să participe la colocviu cercetători, cadre didactice universitare, doctoranzi, masteranzi, studenţi. Aceeaşi persoană poate prezenta comunicări în ambele secţiuni, beneficiind, evident, de o programare corespunzătoare.
Toţi cei care doresc să se înscrie în program sunt rugaţi să trimită, până la 1 octombrie 2010, titlul comunicării, însoţit de un scurt rezumat (c. 200 cuv.) şi precizări privind afilierea instituţională. Sunt rugaţi, de asemenea, după primirea răspunsului de acceptare, să trimită textul comunicării, în format electronic, nu mai târziu de 20 octombrie 2010.
Timpul alocat fiecărei prezentări, incluzând şi discuţiile: 30 min.
Programul simpozionului va fi definitivat până la 1 noiembrie 2010 şi va fi postat pe site-ul Facultăţii de Filosofie: http://filosofie.unibuc.ro
Nu se percepe taxă de participare. Cazarea şi transportul vor fi suportate de participanţi.

Re-inventing utopia: science, politics and religion in early modern Europe

This special issue of the journal “Studii de stiinta si cultura” aims at bringing together research papers coming from the fields of early modern philosophy, intellectual history and history of political ideas, bearing upon the study and exploration of early modern utopia. The focus of our volume will be Francis Bacon’s New Atlantis and its reception in 17th century Europe. We are however equally interesting in the possible intellectual intersections between Francis Bacon’s utopia and other similar writings of the same period. The editors are especially looking for papers dealing with subjects as:
• Intellectual sources of Francis Bacon’s utopian project
• The reception of Bacon’s project in early modern Europe
• Utopianism and millenarism in 17th century England
• The reception of classical political theories/ideas in the utopian thought of early modernity
• Points of intersections between scientific utopianism and political utopianism
This special issue will be published in English, in December 2010. All the papers will be subject to peer-reviewing.
Papers, no longer than 8,000 words and following Harvard editing system should be send no later than 8th of October 2010 to Dana Jalobeanu (dana.jalobeanu@celfis.ro).
