What are the ethical challenges raised by the new and emerging technologies? How will these technologies affect the way we perceive ourselves and the society at large? Can we establish a common ground for evaluating the moral implications of any new or emerging technology? Should we be more cautious or should we let the chance take its course when we develop a new technology? In a world more and more concerned with the risks of its developments, these questions come to open the public debate on the need for ethical evaluation in technology research, development and implementation.

Is there a ‘quest for meaning’ in the recent literature on the emergence of norms? How do evolutionary game theory and evolutionary economics fit into a larger concept of “evolutionism” as an epistemic profile? How do such models and theories influence the landscape of social sciences and political or moral philosophy? How do they enrich our concept of rationality? How can we assess the implicit relativism of the evolutionary approach to norms and culture? Is adding new variables and parameters to the utility function a fruitful extension of the standard theory or just an unnecessary complication? Can virtual interactions and computerized simulations provide a hoped-for testing ground for theories that try to account for the evolution of norms in real-life settings?

Announce an international conference on
Values of the human person. Contemporary challenges
Bucharest, June 3-4, 2011
Times of changes provide special opportunities to discuss on important philosophical issues. The aim of this conference is to focus attention on the values of the human person considered under the paradigmatic changes of the contemporary process of globalization. Paradoxically, continuous qualitative increase and diversification of knowledge cause more and more fragmentation in the human being’s understanding of himself/herself and his/her own cultural and social environment which threatens human civilization in new ways. Within this perspective we identify new challenges addressed to the present role of the humanities, knowledge and culture, arts, natural sciences, sociology which entail a diagnosis of classical, modern and postmodern models of theoretical, scientific, political and artistic thinking related to the problems of the main values of the human being.
